Malaysia welcomes new president of Vietnam

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has congratulated Nguyen Phu Trong who has been sworn in as the new Vietnamese president.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she hoped that this would lead to stronger bilateral ties between Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi.

“I look forward to strengthening the friendship between Malaysia and Vietnam under his leadership,” she said in a Twitter post.

It was reported on Tuesday that Trong was sworn in after getting 99.8% of the votes from Vietnam’s MPs a month after the death of former president Tran Dai Quang.
